Everything you need to know before traveling with us

Baggage Policy

One (1) Personal item and one (1) Carry-On bag are always FREE on Silver Airways, and each passenger is allowed one (1) personal item that must easily fit under the seat or in an overhead compartment plus one (1) carry-on item. Carry-on items will have to be valet checked at the gate due to aircraft restrictions and will be returned to you at the gate upon arrival.

All checked bag service charges are charged per bag, per person, one-way. Our baggage policies are different than other airlines due to the size of our overhead bins.

Silver Airways will accept checked baggage with a maximum weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) per bag and a maximum outside dimension of 62 inches (157 cm) per bag in exchange for any applicable service charges (see Optional Services). Please be aware that certain overweight items of sporting equipment such as surfboards, scuba equipment and fishing gear may incur additional baggage service charges and items over 84 inches in length cannot be carried. Baggage service charges apply at any point where bags are checked. Service charge amounts are charged per person, per bag, one-way - see note below regarding baggage service charges when travel involves Silver and another airline.

For a trip that includes one or more connections, bags will be checked to your final destination, and the service charge will apply for checking a bag from your origin to your destination. For a trip that includes a voluntary stopover, your bags will be checked to your stopover point, where you will collect your bags. When you resume travel, you may check your bags again, subject to applicable charges from the new point of check-in to the destination.

All checked bag prices are charged per bag, per person, one-way. Baggage Service Charges paid online, through Reservations or at the airport are Non-Refundable. When paying baggage service charges online, travelers may pay for a maximum of 2 checked bags. If your baggage needs require you to check additional baggage, or baggage that is over the listed size and weight limits, please note the additional costs for overweight and oversize bags as shown in our Optional Services. Baggage service charges for overweight and/or oversize bags cannot be paid online and are collected at airport check-in as are charges for more than 2 bags. For more information, please review our Optional Services and the Contract of Carriage. When checking more than 2 items, the additional items (no more than 10 permitted) will be loaded on a standby/space available basis and handled in accordance with voluntary separation baggage rules:
When check-in requirements are not met or you have exceeded the checked baggage pieces limit (more than 2), it is possible your baggage may not arrive on your flight. If this occurs, your baggage will be sent on the next available flight with space permitting, tagged as ‘Voluntary Separation’ and when applicable, standby in addition to the standard checked baggage tag. It is the responsibility of the passenger to return to the airport for the retrieval of the impacted baggage upon notification of arrival.

When checking more than 2 items, the additional items (no more than 10 permitted) will be loaded on a standby/space available basis and handled in accordance with voluntary separation baggage rules.

Prohibited items for Carry-on Baggage:

  • The Transportation Security Administration publishes a list of items that can be packed in your carry-on bags.
  • Carry-on baggage may be required to be planeside valet checked prior to boarding the aircraft due to the size of the overhead bins in our aircraft. As a result, certain items are prohibited from being transported in the cargo compartment and Silver Airways requires that the following items be brought on board inside a personal item such as a backpack or purse rather than valet checked at the gate or aircraft:
    • Spare lithium batteries (for portable devices / laptops)
    • Smart Bag lithium battery packs
    • eCigarettes and vaping devices

Prohibited items for both Carry-on and Checked Baggage:

  • The Transportation Security Administration publishes a list of items that can be packed in your carry-on and checked baggage.
  • Please review our entire list of prohibited items in our Hazardous Materials section which includes but is not limited to:
    • Balance Gliders / Hoverboards with Lithium-ion batteries
    • Samsung Galaxy Note 7
    • Liquid Nitrogen (not accepted)
    • Flammable liquids
    • See complete list
    • For more information on dangerous goods, visit the FAA's Pack Safe page.

Travelers exempt from baggage service charges:

  • Active-duty U.S. military personnel get up to 2 free of charge checked bags up to 70 pounds each with a maximum dimension of 62 linear inches; all other baggage service charges and rules apply for checked baggage beyond that exemption. This allowance does not apply to the spouse or dependents of military personnel. Silver also offers a discount to active-duty personnel on their leisure travel.

What happens if you arrive without your bag(s)?

After reporting a delayed bag you will be given an ID number that you can use to track your bag(s) online using the Silver Airways delayed baggage tracking system.

For travel ticketed by a Silver Airways codeshare partner or interline partner

The baggage allowance and service charges of the first carrier in the itinerary will be applicable. For travelers who purchased a full fare first class ticket, with a connecting Silver Airways flight, no bag service charges apply when checking in with Silver Airways. The United MileagePlus credit card holder and United MileagePlus® Premier member baggage service charge waiver program doesn’t apply when checking in with Silver Airways as the first operating carrier.

Portable Electronic Devices

Silver passengers are now able to use their portable electronic devices on all U.S. domestic flights on our fleet of Saab 340B+ aircraft. A portable electronic device (PED) is a small, lightweight, electrically or battery-powered device weighing 2 pounds or less such as a smartphone, tablet, e-reader or handheld computer game. These devices may be used while the aircraft is parked at the gate, and throughout the flight when switched to airplane mode or non-transmit mode.

Larger devices such as laptop computers and DVD players may be used when the aircraft is parked at the gate and the main cabin door is open. The flight crew will advise when these devices must be turned off and stowed prior to closing the main cabin door, and they must remain stowed in an overhead bin or under the seat in front of you during taxi, take-off and landing.

Portable Oxygen Concentrators

Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) approved by the FAA, may be carried and used on board Silver Airways’ flights at no charge, in accordance with specific FAA guidelines.

Passengers needing to use a POC on board should advise Silver Airways of their oxygen requirement when making reservations. Passengers using a POC who make reservations with a travel agent or on the internet need to contact Silver Airways Reservations in advance of travel to ensure Silver Airways has all of the necessary information and can assist the passenger in meeting travel requirements. Silver Airways requires 48 hours advance notice and check-in one hour before the check-in time for the general public to use a Portable Oxygen Concentrator onboard the aircraft.  Failure to meet this requirement will result in denied use of the POC during travel.

Flights operated by Silver Airways do not have an in-seat power source. The passenger must ensure he or she has ample batteries to power the POC for the duration of the flight, any ground connection time where the POC is planned to be used, plus three additional hours to allow for unanticipated delays.

The passenger must ensure all extra batteries are properly protected from short circuiting by having recessed battery terminals or by packaging the batteries so they do not contact metal objects, including the terminals of other batteries.

The passenger must have a signed written doctor's statement. We suggest printing this Medical Verification Statement.

The doctor's statement must:

• State the user of the POC has the physical and cognitive ability to see, hear and understand the device's aural and visual cautions and warnings and is able, without assistance, to take appropriate action in response to those cautions and warnings

• State whether or not oxygen use is medically necessary for all or a portion of the flight(s) listed on the passenger's itinerary
• Specify the maximum oxygen flow rate in liters per minute corresponding to the pressure in the cabin of the aircraft under normal operating conditions
• State the expected total operating time (duration) of the POC extends the entire length of the flight plus three hours.
•  Must be kept by the passenger and provided upon request to Silver Airways’ personnel at any time during travel.

Some seating restrictions apply:

• The POC must be able to fit under the seat in front of the passenger
• A passenger using a POC may not be accommodated in any designated over-wing or floor-level exit seat

Portable oxygen concentrators are considered assistive devices. They do not count toward baggage limits whether or not they are used on board.
Note: When connecting to or from any other airline, the passenger is responsible for notifying and making independent arrangements directly with the other airline.

Infants

Rules for travel with infants under 2 years of age

If you are traveling with an infant or small child, you should know that proper use of an approved child restraint system (CRS) enhances child safety on an aircraft. For this reason, Silver Airways and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strongly recommend that infants and small children who weigh under 40 lbs. be secured in an appropriate restraint device when traveling by air.
Bookings for travel with an infant (lap-child) can be made online

What special rules apply to infants?

For one child less than 2 years old, accompanied by an adult fare-paying passenger and not occupying a seat, there is no charge on domestic flights; for international flights there is a charge of 10% of the adult fare. A maximum of one infant not occupying a seat is permitted for each fare-paying adult.
Infants occupying a seat will pay the applicable adult fare on any flight and must be placed in an approved infant safety seat.
Silver reserves the right to request proof of age at anytime. If a passenger is unable to provide proof of age, the applicable fare will be charged and the child provided an assigned seat.

Does my infant need a boarding pass?

If you choose to purchase a seat so that your infant may travel in his or her restraint system, you will need to obtain a boarding pass for the infant prior to proceeding to the security checkpoint.
If you choose to travel with your infant on your lap (at no additional charge), the infant will not need a boarding pass; however, you will need to advise the check-in agent that you are traveling with an infant as a lap child.

What is an appropriate CRS?

Many child safety seats that are designed for use in automobiles are also appropriate for use on aircraft. Appropriate restraint devices should have hard sides and backs, include integrated shoulder straps, and secure to a passenger seat via channels through which the seat belt is threaded and attached. They should also carry two labels stating: “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards”; and “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft” in red lettering.
Although one might think that any type of restraint system would provide at least some degree of flight safety enhancement, this is not the case. Some child restraints may do a good job of protecting children in automobiles or in other situations, but are not appropriate for aviation use.
Recent testing and research have led the FAA to ban the use on aircraft of certain types of child restraints that may be harmful to a child in the event of an aviation emergency. Booster seats, vest and harness type child restraint systems and lap held child restraints (including belly belts) are not approved for use in aircraft.
Although some that were manufactured before the FAA’s ban may carry an insignia and/or language indicating they are approved for aircraft use, please understand that they are no longer permitted.

Are strollers or infant carriers permitted beyond security?

You may choose to bring your infant to the departure gate in a stroller or infant carrier.
Most infant carriers are designed simply to provide convenience in carrying babies. With the exception of a few recently manufactured automobile safety seats that convert to carriers, they do not provide sufficient protection to qualify as CRSs.
You may carry your baby on and off the aircraft in an infant carrier (provided it does not exceed the size limitations for personal items), but it must be properly stowed either underneath a seat or in an overhead bin for taxi, takeoff, and landing.
If the stroller or infant carrier exceeds the size limitations for personal items, the Airport Service Agent will "gate-check" the item (at no additional charge) to your final destination, and the item will be placed in the cargo compartment for transportation. When you reach your destination the item will be returned to you at the arrival gate.

In which seats may a CRS be used?

CRS may be secured to any seat, excluding exit row seating

Special-Needs

Passengers with Disabilities

An individual with a disability means any individual who has a physical or mental impairment that, on a permanent or temporary basis, substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such an impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment.

A “qualified individual with a disability” is defined as an individual with a disability who obtains a valid ticket, comes to the airport for a flight, and meets the nondiscriminatory Contract of Carriage requirements that apply to all passengers.

General Prohibition of Discrimination

Silver Airways does not discriminate against any qualified individual with a disability in the provision of air transportation.
The amended rules to implement the Air Carrier Access Act of 1986 contain certain requirements designed to address issues that have arisen in providing air travel to individuals with disabilities. The regulations are intended to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to air transportation and that carriers not impose restrictions on such passengers except those necessary to the safe carriage of all passengers.

Refusal to Transport

Silver Airways may refuse transportation to any passenger on the basis of safety, and may refuse to provide transportation to any passenger whose carriage would violate FAA regulations. In exercising this authority, Silver Airways personnel may not discriminate against any qualified individual with a disability on the basis of disability.

Advance Notice Requirements

Except as noted below, Silver Airways may not require a qualified individual with a disability to provide advance notice of his/her intention to travel or of his/her disability as a condition of receiving transportation.
Silver Airways may require up to 48 hours advance notice and one-hour advance check-in concerning a qualified individual with a disability who wishes to receive any of the following services:
  • Transportation for an electric wheelchair.
  • Hazardous material packing for a battery for a wheelchair or other assistive device.
  • Accommodation for a group of 10 or more qualified individuals with a disability, who make reservations and travel as a group
Advance notice is also required for bringing a Portable Oxygen Concentrator on board (see more in our POC policy).
If a qualified individual with a disability provides advance notice to Silver Airways and the individual is forced to change to the flight of another carrier because of the cancellation or delay of the original flight, Silver Airways personnel will provide rerouting assistance to the individual. This may include, but is not limited to, assistance with reservations and ticketing, the provision of ground transportation to the second carrier, and/or assistance in securing appropriate services from the other airline.

Unavailable Services

Silver Airways is unable to accommodate passengers who require an incubator, a respirator, or a stretcher.

Safety Assistants

Silver Airways may not require a qualified individual with a disability to travel with a safety assistant, except in certain limited circumstances dealing with safety.
Silver Airways will require that a qualified individual with a disability, meeting any of the following criteria, travel with a safety assistant as a condition of carriage on the grounds of safety.
  • A person who, because of mental disability, is unable to comprehend or respond appropriately to safety-related instructions.
  • A person who has both severe hearing and severe vision impairments, and cannot establish some means of communication with carrier personnel adequate to permit transmission of the required safety briefing.
  • A person with a mobility impairment so severe that the person is unable to assist in his/her evacuation of the aircraft.

Seat Assignments and Seating Accommodations

Silver Airways may not exclude any qualified individual with a disability from any seat or require that an individual with a disability sit in any particular seat on the basis of disability EXCEPT in compliance with Exit Seating regulations.

Service Animals

Silver Airways will permit a trained service animal to accompany a qualified individual with a disability. A service animal should sit in the floor space in front of the passenger's assigned seat but cannot protrude into the aisles. Passengers may use an approved in-cabin kennel no larger than 17”L x 16”W x 9”H for smaller animals provided its use meets stowage requirements. Exit row seating is prohibited.
Effective January 11, 2021, a customer traveling with trained service dogs will be required to fill out a DOT form confirming the animal meets training and health qualifications. The customer should present the documentation at the ticket counter or at the departure gate.
Additional documentation may be required for an animal traveling to international destinations.

Emotional Support Animals

Effective January 11, 2021, Silver will no longer accept emotional support animal bookings on any Silver or Seaborne flight. This change follows a final rule issued last month by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which states carriers are no longer required to recognize emotional support animals as service animals. The DOT's final rule is available here.
Effective with the new DOT rule, emotional support animals will be transported in accordance with pets in cabin policies and procedures for those that qualify. Silver and Seaborne continues to accept domestic cats, dogs, and household birds for transportation, subject to the policies already in effect

Passengers Using Wheelchairs

Passengers using wheelchairs will be accepted unaccompanied. There is no limit to the number of accompanied or unaccompanied non-ambulatory travelers accepted on any Silver Airways flight.
Silver Airways accepts all types of wheelchairs and carts including folding or non-folding, manual, and electric. One wheelchair per passenger will be transported at no extra charge in addition to the normal bag allowance.
Silver Airways aircraft cannot accommodate wheelchairs in the aircraft cabin. All wheelchairs travel as checked or gate-checked baggage placed in the aircraft’s baggage compartment.  Wheelchairs and other assistive devices have priority over valet baggage belonging to other passengers who board at the same city.

Passengers Using Crutches/Walkers

Passengers using crutches or walkers are acceptable for carriage and, depending upon the extent of their disability, may or may not need assistance; however, Silver Airways personnel will always extend an offer to give assistance as needed.
Crutches or canes can generally be stowed in the cabin (under the passenger’s seat, in the overhead compartment or wardrobe), but must never be stowed in the path to or adjacent to an emergency exit. Walkers may be stowed in the baggage compartment due to their size/shape. Care must always be exercised to avoid damage by shifting cargo, and should always be loaded for easy access at the destination station.

Stowage of Personal Equipment

Silver Airways does not count any assistive device brought into the cabin by an individual with a disability as part of their personal item carry on allotment.
The baggage liability limits do not apply to liability for loss, damage, or delay concerning wheelchairs or other assistive devices.

Communicable Diseases

For travelers with a communicable disease or infection, Silver Airways will not:
  • Refuse to provide transportation -or-
  • Delay transportation -or-
  • Require a medical certificate -or-
  • Impose any conditions, restrictions, or requirements not imposed on all other travelers unless the traveler's condition poses a significant risk to the health and safety of others and the risk cannot be eliminated by a modification of policies, practices, or procedures
Travelers whose travel is delayed due to restrictions imposed by Silver Airways related to their communicable disease or infection may use their tickets without additional fare collection within twelve (12) months of the date of the ticket or have any unused value refunded without penalty.
Travelers who are denied travel due to a communicable disease or infection, upon request, shall be provided a written explanation within 10 days of their request to Silver Airways. The letter will explain the denial of transportation.

Medical Certificates

Silver Airways does not normally require a medical certificate as a condition of acceptance for travel. However, Silver Airways may require one if there is reasonable doubt that a traveler can complete the flight safely without requiring extraordinary medical assistance during the flight. The medical certificate must be dated within 10 days of the flight for which it is presented.

Passenger Information

The Department of Transportation requires that carriers maintain a copy of procedures regarding passengers who need assistance be available at each airport for inspection by interested individuals. Silver Airways satisfies this requirement by allowing travelers to view DOT Rule 14 CFR, Part 382.  A printed copy is available at each airport.
